Though as soon as we learned about her history, I immediately disliked her. I felt that through all of her successes I would like her, after all she seemed like an interesting character. Meeting Evelyn at the beginning, she seems like a wonderful woman. What I imagine Evelyn looks like (photo by Juli Kosolapova from Unsplash) If Evelyn was a man, readers would not put up with her behaviour. She is emotionally manipulative and abusive, mostly to Celia, who is younger than her and naïve. She often only considers herself, then realises later the repercussions for the people around her. She manipulates people, men and women, into getting what she wants.

Evelyn Hugo is very hard to like, and some of her behaviour borders on abusive. My main problem with this book is Evelyn herself. The story itself is relatively easy to follow, with each of Evelyn’s husbands getting a section in Evelyn’s life. Over the course of their meetings, Monique discovers the real love of Evelyn’s life, the woman Hollywood believed to be her rival, Celia St. The story begins with Evelyn auctioning off her iconic wardrobe for charity and requesting a fairly unknown journalist to tell her life story. Throughout each of them she had big dreams and a bigger secret.

The novel follows Evelyn Hugo, an old Hollywood movie star, as she recounts her life and love stories with each of her seven husbands. Last one makes me 💔💔 #thesevenhusbandsofevelynhugo #evelynhugo #celinesbooks #booktok #bookclub #bookquotes ♬ This Town – Niall Horan
